Met office predicts above normal rainfall

FIJI can expect above normal rain until May 2021 because of a La Niña event, statesthe Fiji Meteorological Service in their El Niño and the southern oscillation outlook released on Monday.

Fiji Met states a moderate strength La Niña event is established in the tropical Pacific Ocean where sea waters are cool and are accompanied by an increase in strength of the equatorial trade winds.

“The global climate models favour continuation of a La Niña event through to March to May 2021 period,” Fiji Met stated.

“While the models on average indicate that this event will peak at a moderate strength, there is also a possibility that it could attain peak intensity of a strong event.”

The weather office stated Fiji usually experienced above normal rainfall during a La Niña event, which could cause flooding around the country.
