Kumar swings to golf victory

SUGAR Research Institute of Fiji employee Surendra Kumar proved to be the surprise winner during the A Hussain and Company Ltd sponsored Vanua Levu Championsh­ip at the Fiji Sugar Corporatio­n Labasa course.

He edged defending champion Abid Hussain by one stroke.

Kumar playing on a handicap of nine set the early pace carding three over par 73 in the first round while Hussain a seven-time winner at the event made a disastrous start with nine over par 79.

In the second round Kumar managed to score 77 while Hussain made a charge scoring 72 falling one shot from forcing a playoff.

Kumar finished the tournament with ten over par 150 to claim his first major title.

The 47-year-old was over the moon after beating a strong field of golfers which also included national reps Asish Chand and Rohit Chandra.

He dedicated the victory to his family and friends.

Labasa Golf Club captain Vinod Chand said Surendra was always trying his best in every competitio­n and finally managed to secure the elusive title.

“I would like to thank all the players and sponsors who made the tournament successful,” he said

“For the first time profession­als participat­ed. FSC and Valebasoqa Tropic Board have been supporting the club and help in the promotion of the sport.”

Prateel Chand scored 134 to win the overall net title.

About 45 golfers participat­ed in the two-day event.
