Key energy objectives on agenda

- By LUKE RAWALAI

PRESENTATION of data modelling topped discussions during the second review of the National Energy Policy held in Suva yesterday.

Permanent secretary for Ministry of Infrastructure and Meteorological Services Taitusi Vakadravuyaca said data his team had collected during meetings and a community consultation process formed the basis of this data modelling exercise.

“Furthermore, the workshop will cover a session on clean cooking,” he said.

“Cooking is a form of energy use and is universal in all human societies, also it is known that low-efficiency stoves are a health risk due to the air pollution released by incomplete combustion.

“Therefore, forms of clean cooking are important forms of energy use at home. However, energy use does not stop there.”

Mr Vakadravuyaca explained it was important to note that most of the data and key assumptions were based on several existing national planning documents including the Low Emission Development Strategy (2018-2050) and Fiji Third National Communication Report to the United National Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC).

“There is no doubt that the new National Energy Policy and Fiji’s SDG-7 Roadmap will be closely aligned to these planning documents.

“Our commitments to develop our local renewable energy resources, reduce our carbon emissions and to put in place climate-resilient power sector infrastructure have been embedded in most of our planning documents and policies.”
