Akbar: Such behaviour is unacceptable

- By LUKE NACEI Rosy Akbar.

THE Ministry of Education will not tolerate students involved in sexual activities, says Education Minister Rosy Akbar.

She said it was unacceptable for students to be engaging in such behaviour.

Ms Akbar said should incidents happen outside the school premises then the victims were responsible for their own behaviour.

“That is very unacceptable student behaviour, and what I said, what happens outside the school premises is beyond our control,” she said.

However, she said, the ministry had a zero-tolerance approach on students involved in sexual activities within the school premises.

“If it does happen within our premises then, of course, we have a zero-tolerance approach to that, we will not tolerate any student engaging in such activities within the school premises within the school hours.

“We’ve got to understand that children will be children but the type of children we have these days and the type of behaviour that they portray is very different from that of the past and that is why we need the discipline and guidance to be strengthened from their homes.

“You’ve got to understand that we can’t have teachers controlling or supervising students after school hours. So we can strengthen our policies within the school and we really need to look at sort of partnering with other stakeholders on this.

“While we are approaching the end of the school year, I think it is very important that our teachers and parents work together to see how we can protect and safeguard the interest of all.”

Meanwhile, police spokeswoman Ana Naisoro said police were still investigating a case where a sexually explicit video of a Year 8 student with another boy was shared to others.
