Connectivity restored
INFORMATION and communications technology services have been restored in most parts of Vanua Levu by Telecom Fiji with work still to be done on Taveuni.
Furthermore the company has created a Telecom Communications Relief Assistance with Telecom offering free onnet calls from remote and maritime areas in the North over its satellite network, mainly for those who were affected by Severe Tropical Cyclone Yasa.
In a news release Telecom Fiji chief executive officer Charles Goundar said they wanted to ensure that businesses were back online as soon as possible, considering the economic difficulties the year had brought.
“We recognise that Fijian businesses are the backbone of the Fijian economy, which has already been dealt a heavy blow this year due to the coronavirus pandemic, and it is critical that they are still able to access essential services like banking services, government services and emergency response services to continue operating,” he said.
Mr Goundar said their engineers worked round-the-clock to restore connectivity to the Labasa exchange so that Fijians living in Vanua Levu would be back online and able to access important services as soon as possible.
“Telecom services are still down in Taveuni, unfortunately, but we have our dedicated teams there working, as best and as fast as they can, to restore services.
“Our highest priority is always to ensure there is minimal downtime, as many essential service providers in Fiji rely on Telecom’s ICT infrastructure.”
He said the restoration works had additional physical challenges because of STC Yasa, and Telecom teams worked tirelessly to clear fallen trees, debris and rocks, in addition to testing and tracing works.
