Only 3 of 93 houses survive STC Yasa’s wrath

- By SERAFINA SILAITOGA

ONLY three of the 93 houses in Votua Village, Lekutu, Bua, survived the wrath of super storm Yasa.

Village headman Viliame Catanasiga said he could not explain how no lives were taken or injuries sustained, given the intensity of the winds.

“By midday Thursday we had shifted everyone to the primary school and advised them not to move around,” he said.

“STC Yasa was much more powerful compared with STC Winston and some houses were damaged by fallen trees that were snapped in two like matchsticks.”

Some houses in Saolo Village, Wainunu, were also damaged by the Category 5 cyclone.

Ramasi Salauneune had just added a new extension to his house in time for Christmas, only to see it being blown away.

“I had just built new rooms and extended the porch for my house to cater for the Christmas family gathering,” he said.

“But STC Yasa has spoiled that and I have lost a lot of money.

“I have called my family members and told them not to come for Christmas because our house is damaged.”
