Food bank set up to help hard-hit families

- By WANSHIKA KUMAR

NASINU Junior Chamber (NJC) launched a weeklong food bank appeal to assist people affected by super storm Yasa on Monday.

The chamber placed a big tank in front of Hansons Supermarket, Nasinu to collect food items and monetary donations from the public.

Chamber president Shalendra Kumar said the appeal was organised to help people who had been displaced from their homes and were in need of immediate support.

“Nasinu Junior Chamber is appealing for donations to relieve the hardships people are facing and aid their recovery in the coming months,” he said.

“Our main target area is Vanua Levu as families there have lost almost everything, so we are aiming to assist as many families as possible to help restore happiness there.”

Mr Kumar said the team would travel to Vanua Levu on January 8 to distribute whatever was collected.

“The first day we had a slow start, however, the momentum picked up later in the day and we ended up collecting more than three cartons of food items.

“Apart from having our food bank here, we will also have a similar food drive in Valelevu, Nasinu and we are adamant that by the end of this week-long drive, we will reach our target of catering to almost everyone affected by the cyclone.”

Mr Kumar said the team was also planning to organise fundraising events to assist Vanua Levu students for 2021 school term.
