Human rights advocate

- By WANSHIKA KUMAR

IN this era where many youths prefer to advocate human rights and fight for justice on social media, Sainiana Komairasea came down to the streets to advocate human rights.

Ms Komairasea was one of the participants in the human rights march held on December 10 in Suva.

She said her reason for joining the march was to advocate on the rights of every individual.

“Human rights are very important which provides everyone the confidence to stand up for themselves, and international human rights day is the day when we encourage and represent those who have no say,” she said.

The 19-year-old said representation of women in Fiji had improved, however, change required time.

“There are actions being taken to protect and encourage women’s rights, but there are also challenges faced.

“Change does take time in order for it to be permanent or long term.

“Disciplinary bodies that encourage redress need to know that proper actions don’t necessary mean causing harm.”

Ms Komairasea, who is from Tailevu, said in terms of public speech, boys were meant to be seen as the vocal of the group while women were considered to participate.

“Even in some communities, boys are the ones who are seen to be playing outside or exploring new things, girls are taught to stay at home.”

Ms Komairasea is a Bachelor of Arts student at the University of the South Pacific.

She advised all the youths to study hard and work towards promoting human rights.

“To all the youths, particularly women, study hard and create your own place and identity in your community,” she said.
