Ma’afu: It was like a ‘bomb’

ETA Ma’afu said the force with which super storm Yasa hit the house she was sheltering in sounded like the home was being “bombed”.

The diabetic amputee trembled as she described how she huddled over Reijieli Sokula, her 13-year-old granddaughter who had recently been diagnosed with a brain tumour as STC Yasa tore through Yaro Village on Kia Island.

The 63-year-old said after her house was blown down by strong winds on Thursday afternoon last week, the sight of sheets of corrugat

ed iron, clothes and debris outside her home terrified her.

Ms Ma’afu said when strong winds tore off the roof of her daughter’s house about 8pm, she huddled over her granddaughter in a corner of her daughter’s bedroom.

“We just prayed on for the other four families that sought refuge at the house and asked God to help us make it through the night,” she said.

On Friday morning when the wind abated, Ms Ma’afu rushed to the village nurse’s house.

She said in her 63 years, she had never experienced anything as strong as super storm Yasa.
