MSAF steps in

- By SERAFINA SILAITOGA

THE Maritime Safety Authority of Fiji has removed the wooden plank used by boat passengers at the Black Point jetty on Taveuni. This was done following a request by Fiji Roads Authority. FRA’s acting chief executive Kamal Prasad has advised boat passengers not to use the wooden plank which was placed by some members of the public.

His advice follows an article published in this newspaper last week which included the unsafe crossing at the jetty.

“This crossing is unsafe and we have requested MSAF to remove this hazard. The Black Point Jetty ramp section is still accessible for small boats (i.e. boats with carrying capacity of less than 25 gross tonnage) where the loading and unloading of passengers and goods is also facilitated.

“For safety reasons, please use the access provided. The Black Point Jetty is still closed for vehicular access.

“In the interim, vehicular access is limited to causeway only and the access to the jetty head on foot.”

Mr Prasad reiterated that only small boats servicing the crossing between Taveuni and Natuvu could use the jetty to berth.

“We have erected signs and bollards to stop vehicles from accessing the Black Point jetty head.”

Last month a truck went off the jetty into the sea and remains partially submerged, blocking the walkway.
