Youths recount night of terror

- By SERAFINA SILAITOGA

THREE boys locked themselves in a toilet block fearing for their lives as super storm Yasa barrelled into their village on Thursday night.

Ropate Bolalailai, 10, Tevita Vakatalecala, 12, and 18-year-old Josefa Rokotunidau fled for safety into the toilet block at Daria Village, Wainunu, when the winds whipped up about 10pm.

“We were so frightened because the wind was too strong and it was whistling as it blew through the village,” Mr Rokotunidau said.

“We sat in there until 1am when the winds died down and joined the rest of our families in the hall.”

Some women in the village sought shelter by crawling under their homes with their children.

Lisala Cukicuki said STC Yasa was worse than STC Winston.

“TC Winston came and lasted for only two hours while this one stayed with us all night and damaged our houses and farms,” she said.
