Animal cruelty in Fiji

- AMRIT SINGH Nausori

ON November 30, at 2am, my dog, whose name is Pirate, somehow managed to escape from his shelter and I think he chased someone from our compound, but I am not very sure. Early morning we began a search for him and around 10am he came home with mud and dirt all over his body.

He had bruises on his legs and his left hind leg was broken. He was severely limping and I washed him up. The next day, to my surprise, I saw a gape wound near his left ribs and the gape wound or hole was made using a rod or some kind of harpoon. It was when my fury friends hair had vanished and the flesh and meat from his hind leg and stomach was gone, then I realised it was a serious wound.

My dog has his licence and always stays in his shelter and never in three years had ran off like this.

We took him to SPCA and his chances of survival was zero. He wasn’t eating at all.

The head vet at SPCA operated on my dog as the wound created a hole in his stomach, his genitals were damaged as well and he was urinating from all directions.

SPCA managed to save him and he is doing well and is eating and barking a lot. His wounds have healed 60 per cent only for now and he looks happy.

Thank you SPCA for saving my pet. I knew my dog was a fighter and will be saved. He has lost large amount of flesh and muscle tissue from his hind leg and stomach region near to the kidneys.

Now, I believe Fiji’s law for animals is flawed.

There is no justice for animals in Fiji. We don’t know who did it as it was nighttime and no dog will ever break another dogs’ legs or will ever drill holes into another dog. My pet had no facial injuries. Someone tried to kill him because he is a fierce dog and lets no one enter our compound.

I believe the thing in Fiji is animals are not cared for.

There are evil minds out there and psychopaths who do these things and get away with it.

People need to be jailed for such evil acts. Ministry of Agriculture only blames owners to get licence for their dogs and if the dogs bite someone, it is the owners fault.

When a dog is run by a car or a bus and when pedestrians tease the dogs — it is never that pedestrian’s fault.

In overseas animals are cared for and loved. In Fiji animals carry ticks, fleas and their owners don’t even give them baths. Can the Ministry of Agriculture help Fiji?

Can a law be made that you can only keep one or two dogs at your home and not five or seven. During dogs breeding season, we can’t sleep at night.

Can people be jailed for hurting poor animals such as dogs? Why is no one ever caught by our police force?

Can the licence of our dogs have a chip on them so that we can know their location if they are lost. Can the Government help organisations such as SPCA and Vet Essentials?

These organisations are doing so much for animals in our country, yet a budget is never given to them. NGOs need to be protected as well.
