Fireworks anticipated in national league

-

GREETINGS to all.

Well the wait is over and the much anticipated Premier League and Women’s Super League kicks off this weekend. The ball is finally set to roll and all the eagerly awaiting district fans would see their teams in action.

Due to the cyclones Yasa and Ana, we had to delay the kick-off of the premier league but let me assure each one of you that you will witness exciting and nailbiting matches. The delay for sure has given all the teams more time to prepare and that will make the competition more interesting.

Fireworks are expected to explode in Labasa this Saturday when the 2020 Pillay Garments Champion versus Champion series winner Labasa host Ba at Subrail Park at 1.30pm. Adding more flavour to the match and entertainment for the Labasa fans, the Labasa women’s team will take on Ba women’s in the opener of the first ever Women’s Super League at 11.30am.

On Sunday, the official opening of the Premier League will be held at 2.30pm before the feature match of the opener between Lautoka and Navua at 3pm at Churchill Park in Lautoka. Both teams have some new signings and have played friendlies to build up for the league.

At Lawaqa Park in Sigatoka, the Nadroga women’s side will face Suva women’s at 1pm while Nadroga will host Nadi at 3pm. It will be after five years the Stallions will feature in the top division and it is expected to be a nailbiting fixture. Here at ANZ Stadium in Suva, Tailevu Naitasiri women’s side will take on Rewa womens’s at 1pm while Suva will host Rewa at 3pm. This is also going to be a thriller as both teams are equally good and competitive with some new signings. It is also going to be the battle of coaches as most of the teams will also play under their new mentors. Suva is the only team that has retained its coach from last season.

It is also a proud moment for Fiji football as our US-based national women’s team striker Trina Davis has become the first Fijian to become a professional woman footballer. It’s a proud moment for Fiji as Trina is the first national women’s team player to sign a professional contract. It is a good news and a great boost for Fijian women footballers as we kick-start the Women’s Super League this year which will encourage our female footballers to take up the challenge. Davis is a good role model for many women footballers here in the country and we congratulate her on her milestone achievement.

I urge fans to come out in numbers and support their districts at the various venues and also show support to our women footballers who will be taking the field in the Women’s Super League.

The ticket price for the two matches will be $ 5 flat at all the venues and kids under 10 are free.

Vinaka and have pleasant weekend.
