Cricket Fiji selects 2 teams for Japan event

- By PAULINI CURUQARA

THE National Cricket team has a big task ahead of them as they prepare for the East Asia Pacific qualifiers to be held in Japan in October.

The extended squad was annouced by the chairman Meli Saubulinayau and national coach Joeli Mateyawa on the weekend.

Mateyawa said they had set their training program that would run from this month until August

“We have chosen two teams and this is the first time we have picked two national teams,” Mateyawa said.

“The reason is that when one team is chosen, there is no back up players on call to step in and continue to the level that we want to be in.

“We didn't have any development team present to back us up and we had to struggle.

“Now getting two teams is to help push in players to be on another level.”

He said one area that they would focus on was improving the batting department.

“We have a good chance of bowling, but in the area of batting, that is where we will have to work on.”

Currently Fiji is in Division Six, he said.
