MP: Make learning interesting
SOME students do not want to go to school because they find it difficult, says Education Minister Rosy Akbar as she called on educators to make learning more interesting.
She made the comment while speaking at the Ra District Education Symposium for heads of schools recently.
Ms Akbar said an investigation by the ministry revealed many students opted not to attend school because of the difficulties they faced in understanding the material being studied.
“So they move from one district to another, they leave their parents to go and stay with their grandparents,” she said.
She said the issue could be linked to some students living on the streets.
“Three weeks ago we met up with this group of students who have found a home on the streets of Suva.”
Ms Akbar said it was important to find the root cause of such actions.
“Let’s find out what is the cause of it, the meeting held has a reason and my reason for anything is to find out why children don’t want to go to school .
“Some say the teachers are very tough, they don’t understand us, I can’t understand maths and English, my marks are very poor, I’m bullied by children, I’m made fun of and things like that.”
She said it was the responsibility of educators to make learning interesting so that students were encouraged to attend school.
“Every child in Fiji should be in school and for some reason, if they are not then as educators, it becomes our social and moral responsibility to see how best we can encourage our children to come back to school.”
