Hard situation for operators

- By ABISHEK CHAND

THE lockdown is a “hard situation made harder” for tourism businesses, according to the Fiji Hotel and Tourism Association chief executive officer Fantasha Lockington.

However she said the call was from medical experts and they were going to go along with the directive given.

Ms Lockington said most hotels were closed during the week days and open during the weekends.

“The hotels are mostly open on the weekends so it’s a hard situation made harder but what are you going to do, you got to keep people safe,” she said.

“There is a need for everyone to be safe so no one is going to complain because it is just making the situation harder — it’s just something we all got to be prepared for and many of them are already practising safe hygiene practices and simply continue to do that.”

She said the vaccination was an added safety layer and the public was urged to get it.

“We all need to be on the same page in terms of making sure that we support getting vaccinated and the reason you are getting vaccinated is because that’s how we protect ourselves and our families.”

She added once the medical experts were in agreement of the number of people that had been vaccinated that is when it could be decided when the borders would open.

Ms Lockington said hotel staff were already undergoing training or have already been trained.

She said those staff in quarantine hotels for those repatriation flights were equipped with full gear and practising proper protocols.
