RFNS Kikau back
THE Republic of Fiji Navy’s RFNS returned last week after a month long deployment to Fiji’s exclusive economic zone (EEZ) and archipelagic waters.
The deployment was to enable a safe and secure Fiji through effective maritime surveillance and presence out at sea.
It allowed the engagement of defence, local partners and public awareness on maritime security issues which are critical responsibilities of the Fiji Navy.
According to the Fiji Navy, the deployment began with exercises and EEZ patrol with the French Navy which was then followed by inshore fisheries surveillance patrol with the Ministry of Fisheries.
The inshore fisheries surveillance patrol covered the inshore of the West and Northern Division and included the surveillance of yachts operating in Fiji under the blue lane initiative.
The RFNS according to the Fiji Navy also spent a couple of days around Kia waters on Vanua Levu after reports of poaching in the surrounding waters, and they also utilised the opportunity to create awareness and engage islanders on maritime issues.
During the deployment, the RFNS conducted a total of 29 boarding and inspections of vessels.
The Fiji Navy highlighted that it will continue to support other government agencies such as the Ministry of Fisheries, Fiji Revenue and Customs Service and Maritime Safety Authority of Fiji in enhancing maritime safety and security.
It also ensures that government intentions highlighted in national policies such as the national oceans policy, climate change policy and the national development plan are well supported from a maritime security perspective.
