Malawai tourney a success

- By SHIRAZ KASIM

THE Malawai Eagles Volleyball Club of Votualevu in Nadi successfully hosted a mini volleyball tournament at the Malawai ground last Saturday.

More than 15 teams participated in the event, including some volleyball clubs outside of Votualevu.

Spokesperson for the MEVC Sai Vulawalu said the volleyball tournament was organised for a noble cause.

“The executives decided to hold a mini volleyball tournament at Malawai to deter youths from engaging in criminal activities,” she said.

“Our youths are the future leaders of tomorrow and it’s so disheartening to note that their population in prisons exceed that of any other age group.

“So, we thought of occupying the youths not only from within the vicinity but outside of Nadi to be involved in the sport of volleyball as a way of deterrence from becoming a nuisance to society.”

Vulawalu said such meets also enabled the interest in a minor sport to spiral.

“There is an abundance of talent in the Western Division and we were amazed to see some exciting and skilful volleyball players strutting their stuff during the mini tournament.

She paid tribute to the sponsors of the one-day meet.

“Sincere gratitude to Higgins Fiji and the manager of MEVC Inia Yaya for their generous sponsorship.”

Meanwhile, Flames VC of Lautoka won the women’s division, beating Vixen VC 2-1 while Jayce VC of Nadi overpowered Brothers VC from Vatukoula 2-0 in the men’s grade.

The winners received $350 and the runners-up had to settle for $150 in both the grades.
