A 65-YEAR-OLD Nadi man says if every Fijian established a backyard garden, there wouldn’t be a need for people to rely on Government for rations.

Anil Kumar said his backyard garden had provided for his family’s food needs during the COVID-19 outbreak.

“My son is out of work because of the pandemic but we aren’t worried because I have grown different vegetables to sustain our livelihood,” the Votualevu man said.

Mr Kumar said he had cassava, bitter gourd, chillies, eggplant, pumpkin, tomatoes, cabbage, coriander and dalo in his backyard garden.

“I encourage everyone to establish a backyard garden. I am not working, my wife is not working, my son is not working but we have food.”

He said people must realise that Fiji would have to live with COVID-19 and not rely on government assistance.

“If everyone makes an effort, then nobody will have to rely on rations.”

Mr Kumar said with the increase in COVID-19 cases daily, it was prudent for people to stay home so the virus could stop spreading.
