Family embraces healthier living

- By REPEKA NASIKO

A LAUTOKA pineapple farmer says his family is learning to let go of sugar, salt and flour and is learning to embrace wholesome and natural food instead.

Semi Vuki of Lololo in Lautoka said the change in diet that had been forced upon his family was “a good thing”.

“We don’t buy sugar anymore, instead we use pineapple juice,” he said.

“We don’t buy salt and tea. Some of these things we can live without. If we don’t have flour then we have cassava.

“I had to remove some of these things from our shopping list to save money.”

He said he was looking forward to the start of the 2021 cane crushing season.

“I’m part of a cane cutting gang and a lot of us are looking forward to harvesting because we can get money from there.

“That money should be enough to last us for a couple of weeks.”

He said COVID-19 had placed his family at crisis point; of the eight people who lived in their home, only one was employed.

“She works in town but her hours were reduced, last week she only worked two days.

“So I don’t buy some things we can live without and I sell what we grow.

“We save the little money that we get and learn to do without.”
