Kaiviti Silktails focus on league leaders

- By ZANZEER SINGH

THE Kaiviti Silktails have put in extra effort in their preparations this week in readiness for the uphill battle against leaders St Marys Saints in round 15 of the Ron Massey Cup in Sydney, Australia on Saturday.

The Silktails were thrashed 56-6 by the Saints in round two of the competition in March.

The Wes Naiqama-coached side is coming off a disappointing 24-all draw against the Windsor Wolves last weekend, a game the side should have closed out in the last ten minutes.

Naiqama said it was the first draw that he had been involved in after a long time so it came as a weird empty feeling.

He said in regards to the review of the game, they were disappointed not to start off well.

“But then we did well to stay in the grind and take the lead at one stage,” Naiqama said.

“With 10 minutes to go, we took the lead and it was down to game management and lack of experience that we could not close it off.

“They ended up scoring and then in the last minute we were in the position to kick the field goal to win but we found the wrong person with the last tackle and that was the ball game with 30 seconds to go.”

The Silktails remain in sixth spot in the RMC with 13 points from 11 matches recording five wins, one draw and five losses. The Saints sit in pole position with 22 points following ten wins and a loss.

Naiqama said they needed to get better in three key areas which was their completion rate, discipline and patience level.

“Saints is a quality side and if we don’t tick all those three boxes and put in a good performance then we could be at the back end. I have confidence in the group in the way we have prepared up to this point just by seeing the mentality of the boys as they came in on Monday after Saturday’s performance.”
