Fiji women’s opponent Brazil in isolation

- By MAIKELI SERU

MEMBERS of the Brazil women’s 7s team, who will meet the Fiji women’s 7s team in the pool games of the Olympic Games in japan, are under isolation because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Reuters reported that a COVID-19 cluster at a Japanese hotel where dozens of Brazilian Olympic team members are staying, raised new concerns about infections at the Tokyo Games.

Tokyo City has recorded its highest number of new cases for six months.

Seven staff members at the hotel in Hamamatsu city, southwest of Tokyo, had tested positive for the coronavirus, a city official said.

But a 31-strong Brazilian Olympic delegation, which includes judo athletes, are in a “bubble” in the hotel and separated from other guests and have not been infected.

The Russian women’s rugby 7s team were also in isolation after their masseur tested positive for COVID-19, the RIA news agency reported from Moscow - as was part of the South African men’s rugby team after a case on their inbound flight.

Tokyo, where a state of emergency has been imposed until after the Games end on August 8, recorded 1149 new COVID-19 cases on Wednesday, the most since January 22.

Meanwhile, with no official word had been received from Team Fiji, Fiji women’s 7s coach Saiasi Fuli said preparations continue against pool opponents France, Canada and Brazil.

“We predicted it will be a tough pool,” Fuli said.

“It is a very challenging one. We have tried to continue to plan, tune and map our strategy against our pool opponents. Everything will be tough and we have trained our girls to try and sustain this kind of situations, counter it and continue to work hard and pull through with positive results.”
