Midwives ‘unsung heroes’

- By REPEKA NASIKO

MIDWIVES are the unsung heroes of postnatal care, says Lautoka Hospital Medical Superintendent Dr Rigamoto Taito.

While celebrating International Day of the Midwife in Lautoka yesterday, Dr Taito said midwives deserved more recognition for their work to ensure mothers and their newborns were given the best care.

“Despite all of the wonderful work that you do, there is still a lot to do to acknowledge the work that our midwives do,” she said.

“Today is a day they are recognised, but even after today they always have to be reminded of the important role they play in health care.

Dr Taito said last year, midwives from Lautoka Hospital were relocating the maternity unit to Viseisei Sai Health Centre, which presented its own challenges.

“Through our lockdown they persevered and worked together to take care of our mothers and make sure our service continued despite what was happening around us.

“They rallied together, which is a testament of their resilience.

“The hospital is a second home for many of the staff who work here, and for everyone to still be able to deliver their service

at such a challenging time was a really commendable effort.

“For our midwives, they ran our maternity unit and looked after our mothers and their newborns.

“So, this day is very important not only for the midwives, and we should always celebrate the work that they have done for us.”
