FIJI’s first eco-friendly electric vehicle was launched by Minister for Environment Dr Mahendra Reddy at the Pala’s Auto Services Ltd in Vatuwaqa yesterday.

“To put it simply electric cars give us cleaner and safer Fijian streets, towns and cities,” Dr Reddy said.

“We are gathered here to embrace a new technology for Fiji, the introduction of eco-friendly electric vehicles which is a significant

step in the direction of carbon neutrality.

“Over the last decade issues concerning our environment has entered nearly every discourse that is held around the country.”

He said in over a year an electric car could save up to 1.5 million grams of carbon dioxide.

“That’s the equivalent of more than two return flights from Nadi to Auckland.

“It is estimated that the road transport accounts for around 30 per cent or more of air pollution in many towns and cities around the world depending upon the populace.

“It was estimated a few years ago that the annual ridership within the Nausori – Suva corridor alone was close to 16 million.”

Dr Reddy said the use of electric vehicles would aid in savings on fuel usage as Fiji spends 19 per cent of its total merchandise bill on fuel alone.

“Use of electric vehicles could go a long way to bring down this expenditure and this is needed now more than ever given the rising fuel costs that all sectors of the economy are now facing.

“There are a number of concessions made available to a company developing electric vehicle charging stations.

“The capital investment would just need to be more than $100,000 - this has been effective from August 1 2018; it used to be previously $500,000.”

The new MG ZS EV is a family friendly zero emissions electric car designed with a driving range up to 263km from a single charge.
