Back at last

AT long last, the Fiji Finals is back and scheduled for July 8- 9.

Can Ratu Kadavulevu School defend its title or will a school from the Western Division create an upset?

Wait a minute, what about Adi Cakobau School defending its title also.

It feels a bit weird that this is starting again after almost a two-year lapse.

For now, it will be a slow start to preparations for most schools, let alone athletes trying to warm up in the cold weather of July.

One can be rest assured that the vocal cheering squad from ACS and Natabua High School will make their presence known.

Wait a minute, will only vaccinated athletes and fans be permitted entry to the national stadium?

Only time will let us know of the results of the 2022 Fiji Finals but don’t be surprised if scouts of the Fijiana and Fijian Drua are spotted amongst spectators.

Outreach program

I WRITE to say a very big vina du va levu to Dr Mundi Qalokamake and his very professional team at the Pacific Eye Institute for their outreach program extended to the hundreds of my fellow Nadi citizens.

Thank you wholeheartedly for your generous eyesight restorations rendered at no cost at all.

My sincere thanks must also go to the Fred Hollows Foundation of New Zealand for making your charitable services available here in Fiji.

We are truly fortunate. These words of thanks and heartfelt appreciation are not adequate enough in conveying our sincere gratitude.

Thank you for making the “blind see again” through your cataract surgery at no cost.

I am reliably informed such surgery can cost up to $2000 per eye. (I stand corrected, however).

The elderly, especially those with diabetes, should grab the opportunity and take advantage of this charitable gift.

ONE of the answers to Arvind Mani’s question (FT 5/5) is a public debate like being placed in the witness box in a trial and the cross examinations will leave you no place to hide.

Only the guilty will be fearful of the witness box.

The innocent will be fearless.

Times price

I REFER to the letter by Arvind Mani titled “What’s important price or quality” FT 30/4.

I am also in agreement with him that a price rise is justified but I have an issue with increase amount of $0.40.

I do not agree that the price rise is “insignificant”.

The suggested price increase of The Fiji Times from $1.10 to $1.50 is, in my view, not justified.

It is an approximately a 50 per cent increase.

With what I believe is a daily circulation of over 20,000 this will be an $8000 daily increase in revenue $56,000.00 over a week and $2,912,000 annually.

Are we the readers being penalised into contributing towards the advertising revenue of The Fiji Times?

A $0.10 increase is more appropriate but even that will give them a $728,000 annual increase in revenue.

It will be interesting to know the thoughts of Richard Naidu and Rajnesh Ishwar Lingam on this issue.

VIJAY P. MADHAVAN Borron Rd, Suva (Unfortunately the figures raised by Mr Madhavan are based on assumptions. The price had to be reviewed for sustainability of the business due to the increase in price for some key raw materials. In the last six years, the economic environment has also changed and the cost of doing business has increased significantly. — Editor)
