The truth is critically important, says A-G

ATTORNEY-GENERAL Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum says one of the fundamental issues about leadership is the leader’s ability to be able to only speak the truth.

He shared this with prefects of Tavua College where he officiated as chief guest of their prefects’ investiture ceremony on Friday.

“The truth is critically important,” Mr Sayed-Khaiyum said.

“And if you are armed with the truth, you will never be able to falter.

“When I say to speak of being truthful, it firstly means being honest with yourself. You need to be able to always constantly assess yourself.”

Mr Sayed-Khaiyum reminded the school leaders it was imperative to be honest with themselves and only then would they be honest with other people.

“We have different faiths in Fiji. If you look at all the different faiths, each one of these faiths has a particular tradition, has a particular festival, where it forces you to actually reflect upon your life.

“So, whether you’re doing Lent, before Easter, whether it is Easter itself, whether it is in the lead-up to Diwali, the message about Diwali, whether you’ve just done fasting and coming out of the fasting season, all of that actually tells you to be able to reflect on yourself, how you are truthful to yourself.

“How you interact with people around you, your friends, your family, your community in your country, because if you are able to be honest with yourself, then you will be able to be honest with other people.”

The A-G officiated at a few prefects investiture ceremonies in the West this week.
