ROAD TO RWC Only the best for World Cup
Fijiana line up Oceania, Canada
ONLY the best players will make the team to the Women’s Rugby World Cup for the Fijiana side. These were the words of coach Senirusi Seruvakula after the team returned from Australia on Sunday.
The side comfortably won the Super W title against Australian state teams before facing Japan and the Wallaroos on its Road to the World Cup.
Seruvakula said the Fijiana Drua’s successful campaign at its maiden Super Rugby W season and the Fijiana 15s side matches against Australia and Japan had given him a good understanding of where the team lies.
“Going into the Rugby World
Cup I want to take the best team. I’m proud of the players who participated in the Super W competition. They stepped up a level from the Skipper Cup,” Seruvakula said.
“More than half of them only took up the sport recently. They were consistent playing against teams that had been playing high level rugby for some time.
“It took us two years to play in a proper women’s competition locally. It was a big step for these girls.”
Seruvakula confirmed the Fijiana 15s side would play more matches before the Rugby World Cup.
“There is a Test match against Canada which has to be confirmed by World Rugby. That will be held in Fiji after we come back playing in the Oceania
Championship before we go to the RWC.”
Fiji is expected to face Samoa, Tonga, the Cook Islands and Papua New Guinea at the Oceania Championship in New Zealand next month.
The Women’s Rugby World Cup will be held in New Zealand in October where Fiji is grouped with England, France and South Africa.
