‘Stop changing Staff laxity, council submission delays
LACK of skilled personnel was the major reason for the delay in the municipal councils submitting their financial statements for audits.
While contributing to the debate on the “Review of the Office of the AuditorGeneral’s (OAG) 2020 Annual Report and Assessing the Office of the Auditor-General’s – Supreme Audit Institution (SAI) Performance Measurement Framework” in Parliament yesterday, Minister for Local Government Premila Kumar said there was staff laxity leading to delays.
“There was staff laxity and the use of improper accounting software to name a few but I must give credit to the CEOs of the municipal councils,” she said.
“In the last couple of years, they have submitted more than 130 annual reports to the Parliament and the municipal councils all the others are still working to clear the backlog.”
She said they would be presenting some more annual reports in the Parliament soon.
“The municipal councils in collaboration with the ministry, they will work towards improving the systems and processes at the council and they have made a lot of progress in that area by recruiting the right people for the right job, the organisation structure has been complete, various policies have been introduced.”
OPPOSITION MP Aseri Radrodro says the Government needs to stop changing the Auditor-General on a regular basis.
