Clean-up campaign
THE Fiji National Provident Fund (FNPF) partnered with various organisations to roll out its Keep Suva Clean campaign in Suva yesterday.
The organisations included International Union for the Conservation of Nature Oceania (IUCN), Suva City Council (SCC), HFC Bank and the Fijian Competition and Consumer Commission (FCCC) and the campaign would target the Nubukalou Creek and Suva foreshore.
FNPF general manager human resources Ravinesh Krishna said the campaign was part of the fund’s annual corporate social responsibility program and collaborated with other agencies to focus on the environment.
“We need to keep our city clean and we’re proud to have been able to launch this initiative,” Mr Krishna said.
“I encourage other organisations to do the same and welcome them to join our campaign as we work towards a greener Fiji.”
Participants collected over 300kg of waste and debris from the Nubukalou Creek and waste collected included plastic materials, metal, paper, wood, glass, household and general items.
IUCN oceania regional program coordinator Kenneth Kassem acknowledged the efforts of all participants as well as confirming their support for future similar campaigns.
“Last year we collected over 1000kg of waste,” he said.
“So today’s collection is an indication that there is improvement and hopefully in time, we will have no rubbish to pick up at all.”
The IUCN’s role included the auditing of all waste collected in which training for FNPF staff members was also conducted earlier in the week to assist in the waste classification process.
FNPF staff members in the Western Division also took time out yesterday morning to clean up Wailoaloa and Saweni Beaches.
