A TELECOMMUNICATIONS company yesterday announced its backing of the Fiji Muslim Inter-District Championship (IDC) at its head office in Nabua, Suva.

Digicel Fiji will sponsor the Fiji Muslim IDC which will be held from Tuesday, June 7 to Sunday, June 12. The Central teams will play at the Uprising Resort Sports Complex in Deuba while the Western teams will play at Prince Charles Park in Nadi. The top teams will move on to play in the finals at Prince Charles Park.

Digicel Fiji chief executive officer Farid Mohammed says the organisation is proud to support grassroots soccer.

“We are grateful to be given the opportunity and be a part of the 2022 Fiji Muslim IDC,” he said.

“We made a commitment to the community and sports and I am proud to say that we have stood by that commitment.

“We love the opportunity to help youths showcase their talents and allow them to become professionals in the sport they are good at. This enables them to provide a living for their families and set them up for a better life.”

Mohammed said in a way it encouraged religious teaching and understanding to individuals from other walks of life.

“From a religious point of view, this event does not only bring people together, it also paves the pathway to religious learning. It brings people and communities closer.

“I was very pleased to see during the last tournament the officials stopped the games to participate in a prayer event at the grounds.

“That is important to us and it provides a good understanding to the religious teachings.”

Fiji Muslim Sports Association vice president Mohammed Anees Khan said the association was thankful to Digicel Fiji for the partnership and commitment to supporting grassroots soccer.

“We are thankful to Digicel Fiji for continuing to support us in developing grassroots soccer,” he said.

“We are looking forward to a successful competition and hopefully more partnerships with Digicel.”
