Eroding moral values All religious organisations have to play their part – Vunisuwai

- By RAKESH KUMAR

THE largest church denomination in Fiji, the Methodist Church in Fiji is concerned with slowly eroding morality in our society.

President Reverend Ili Vunisuwai believes the root cause of immoral behaviour is in the spiritual side of our life.

“We are all concerned about the slowly eroding morality in our society,” he said.

“We have to deal with the root cause.

“The root cause of the immoral behaviour is the spiritual side of our life.

“Once you take that out, you are shaking the foundation of our society, our nation.

“As you know, we are a secular state now, we have freedom of speech, freedom of choice, freedom of belief, so we are not surprised if moral decay ultimately comes up.”

Mr Vunisuwai said all religious organisations had to play their part to deal with the issue.

“We do not entertain it, but we are doing our best as a religious organisation to deal with it.

“Not only us, I am talking about any religion, the Muslim,

Sikh, Hindu or Christianity, we all have our part to play in society.

“We are sitting on a shaking ground in the foundation of our society.

“Spirituality is the conscience of our nation.

“Once you take that out, you’re building the nation on the sand foundation.”

Mr Vunisuwai said he was concerned with the rising moral decay in the nation.

“We are doing our best, our local congregation as well as families.

“But in the social context, in schools for instance and in the society that’s where the trend is going.

“We are fighting the battle too. “We are creating awareness on drugs, climate change, human trafficking, corruption, gender violence etc.”
