Qantas plan to expand Fiji Airways Qantas planned to consolidat­e Fiji Airways and expand its operations Mr C.O.Turner, chief executive and general manager said in a statement issued in Sydney. He said this would probably require new capital and larger aircraft than the de Havilland Drovers which Fiji Airways used. The type of aircraft which Qantas would pay for Fiji Airways would be dependent on the developmen­t of the airfields in the colony.

Another Vanua Levu Shark Attack

On Wednesday, a man aged 29 years from Kia Island was bitten by a shark while spear fishing with four friends on the reef at Vorovoro Passage. Tomu Lagikula was brought to Labasa by launch and arrived about 4pm when he was rushed to the Labasa Hospital. He was conscious but felt pain where the shark had attacked him below the knee on his left leg.

City may seek withdrawal

The Government may be asked to withdraw its directive that the Fiji Electricit­y Authority take over Suva City Council's electricit­y undertakin­g. Minutes of the council's FEA negotiatin­g committee, tabled at the monthly meeting of the council, drew a brief but brisk exchange on Thursday night. The committee expressed concern at the lack of progress in negotiatio­ns with the FEA.

Probe of dock meat handling

The Fiji Government's Medical Department has ordered an immediate investigat­ion into the methods of dischargin­g fresh meat on to Suva wharf. A spokespers­on for the Medical Department said the chief health inspector had received a complaint from the manager of Wailekutu Meats Ltd, Mr Murray McNae. "I found sheep carcases dying on the road lying on the road and other meat mixed in with a paint shipment," Mr McNae said.

Children in reef drama

Small children were put overboard in life jackets when a boat went on a reef at Tai Island, off Lautoka yesterday. Two of the children were under four years old, staff at the island's Beachcombe­r Resort said. The manager, Tony Wilkinson said the boat was the 75ft Amatra from New Zealand which was tied to a buoy about 150 yards from shore. Soon after 11am yesterday the mooring chain broke in strong north-east winds and rough seas.

NZ budget boots aid for Fiji New Zealand's aid to Fiji will increase under the new national budget announceme­nt in Wellington last week. A spokesman for the NZ High Commission in Suva said Fiji would receive a substantia­l rise in aid but full details were not yet

known.

Saturday, June 26, 1974 Minister on murder

charge

A church minister appeared in Suva Court yesterday charged with the murder of a 13-year-old boy. The minister is alleged to have put live electric wires in a fruit tree in his garden and caused the death of the boy.

The boy was electrocut­ed on Wednesday evening when he touched a live wire in a mango tree. The minster lived in Nairai Road about four chains from the dead boy's home. He was arrested by police who came to his home on Thursday evening.

Council set to revise Suva

street names Widespread changes in Suva street and road names will take effect from September 1. A Suva City Council meeting on Thursday night decided to accept recommenda­tions by a special subcommitt­ee.

The new street names include streets for the Prime Minister, first Governor-General of Fiji, colonial governor of Fiji, former Suva city mayors, city councillor­s, Fijian chiefs and community workers.
