Treat for the elderly
ONE of the events that took place annually during the Hibiscus Festival was contestants paying a visit to people who were in need of help or company.
An article published by The Fiji Times on September 2, 1994 recalled a time when residents of Father Law Home were visited by the winners of the Hibiscus Quest who also served them more than food but company as well.
The Hibiscus princess 1994, Sophia Austin, first runner-up Krystal Smith and second runner-up Jocelyn Taylor made the trip outside of Lami Town to treat 22 elderly men to morning tea.
As they served the elderly residents with refreshments and treats, they were blessed with huge smiles and tonnes of gratitude.
Dressed in attires fit for a princess, they looked as glorious as they did on stage when receiving their crowns.
“I feel proud when I realise that I’ve made some people happy today who are far from their homes and family,” said princess Sophia.
“These men are here today because their own families are not capable or do not have the money to take proper care of them.”
Anare Lomalagi, who was from Deuba Village in the Serua Province, claimed to be living in the home for over a year.
“The Queens are very beautiful and they make us reminisce on our young days,” said the father of two.
Sister Mary Ina said when they had small children visiting the home, the residents were overjoyed and it changed their attitude towards life.
With the help of Vision Fiji community care project and the provision of refreshments by Penguin Ice Cream, Coca-Cola and Nasese Bakery, the trip was a success.
