- By ELENA VUCUKULA

THIRTEEN youths graduated from the National Youth Band program at the Fiji National University (FNU) in Valelevu, Nasinu.

Officiating at the event, Minister for Youth and Sports Parveen Kumar said the training centre for the National Youth Band programs had been one of the standout programs of the ministry.

“My ministry is all about empowerment opportunities,” he said.

“Your training is about empowerment in the music and performing arts industry.

“Through our non-formal education training, we are committed to providing equal opportunities to youths who may have dropped out of the formal education stream.

“And looking at pathways for a sustainable future.

“It is a government training centre or institution in Fiji that is solely dedicated to training in music with no fee for intake.”

Mr Kumar said the FijiFirst Government had an action plan for all Fijians.

“This Government is focused on the future and totally committed to the future of all Fijians.

“Unlike previous governments, we do not promise a vision without any regard for its process or its implementation.

“As leaders during our term in Government, we are not working just for ourselves but for our children and our grandchildren and of course the youths of Fiji.”

Band master Saula Macanavere said the program instilled discipline and change of behaviour among students.

“I would like to urge the youths who are interested in learning music for them to do so, it’s a good career opportunity for them in future.

“Right now, getting a job is difficult. The military forces, police, Navy and correction services all have bands. Some of my students from this National Youth Band program have joined this discipline.” 2. Kinivuwai Matson with his father Aminiasi Baleiwai.
