Acknowledging our teachers!

Want to be a hero

OILEI! What’s he doing now, why isn’t he kicking for touch? Trying to go solo, and without any back-up to follow.

We should just do what the coach said

and not be a hero and be different.

See, see, you see what just happened, when you don’t want to listen. Now he has lost possession, when he lost the ball forward. Now we will have to defend and someone will get yellowcarded again.

Oh why, oh why, did we not retain that ball? Being a tough guy, just doesn’t cut it at all!

I guess he will get an earful, from the coach, when we get to the changing room,

let alone the swearing from the boys

that will be never-ending! EDWARD BLAKELOCK Admiral Circle, Pacific Harbour

Good governance

I BELIEVE Fiji does not need a government that rules by fear.

We deserve better.

Teachers’ world

THE Fiji Times report by Rajnesh Lingam on “unsung heroes” (5/10) on the World Teachers Day has encouraging messages for all teachers as they play the most important role in a child’s life.

Every year this day is celebrated with blessings, love, treats and prayers for the dedicated teachers who are always prepared to put children first.

We always remember our days with teachers throughout our various stages of life.

They may have retired with their dedicated services leaving their footprints behind.

Teachers in the teaching learning process with modern technologies are always prepared to upgrade themselves professionally in accordance with the expectations of parents and education stakeholders.

They have to face many challenges on issues of climate change, pandemic and other global crises, working closely with parents and school.

Let’s honour our teachers with words of encouragement as they are truly our “unsung heroes”.

I feel those words will be the best rewards for teachers more than any gifts on the World Teachers Day as they are committed to “service before self - child our hope”. It’s not what you poured into the students but what is planted that matters.

“A teacher affects eternity; he can never tell where his influence stops” - Henry Adams.

Happy teachers day God bless you all. TAHIR ALI Hamilton, New Zealand

HEARTY thanks to the editor-in-chief, Fred Wesley, for the powerful editorial titled ‘Acknowledging our teachers’ in yesterday’s The Fiji Times.

Thank you Wesley for deliberating on the vital roles teachers play and that there needs to be more support for teachers.

Via the editorial, the editor-in-chief alluded to the anniversary of signing of the 1966 ‘UNESCO/ILO Recommendation concerning the Status of Teachers’. The editorial noted the roles teachers played during the COVID-19 crisis.

It noted that teachers are the engines at the heart of our education systems and that without their work, it is impossible to provide inclusive, equitable and quality education to every learner.

The editorial highlighted that teachers are essential to pandemic recovery and preparing learners for the future and we should be acknowledging the effort of our teachers every day.

There is a need to transform conditions for teachers and address issues arising out of deviant behaviour from students.

I thank our teachers for their efforts and for doing great things in and out (sports) of the classroom for the holistic development of our children.

God bless!
