Lautoka ropes in Tieku

SUSANA, the wife of the late Etuate Waqa was in tears when she received his plague during the Fiji National Rugby League 30th anniversar­y dinner on Wednesday night.

Susana, who hails from Vunuku Village in Moala, Lau said she wished her husband was alive to witness this auspicious moment.

Eddie, as he commonly known, was part of the first Fiji rugby team in 1992 that played in the Winfiled 7s in Sydney.

He was 29 years old and played for Nadera in rugby union competitio­n when he was select to play for Fiji in two occasions.

Waqa was among the influentia­l second row players in Fiji.

He died when he was 54 years old.

He was among the first local seven players who switched to rugby league in 1993 along with Noa Nadruku, Pauliasi Tabulutu, Alifereti Dere and Niko Baleiveret­a.

Susana was emotional and thanked Fiji National Rugby League for rememberin­g her late husband.

“I’ve been supporting right until his passing and I am grateful to God for his talent,” she said.

“As a wife your duty is to support your husband in everything they do.

“He was passionate for rugby and rugby league and we’re grateful that Sisa followed his step to become a league player.

“His always supporting the players, teams giving advice to whoever needs it and I am proud of him and his achievemen­t.

“But I only wish he was here so that I can accompany him and thank him for what he has done to the sport of rugby league.”

The former Fiji and Tonga 7s coach and former dual rugby internatio­nal, would be remembered by many as one of the best rugby mentors the country had produced.

LAUTOKA has roped in Ghanaian-born attacking forward Derek Tieku to add firepower to its strike force for the All in One Cakes and Restaurant 2022 Pacific Community Cup which will be played in Nadi next week.

Tieku joined the Fulham under-18 side in England in 2012 and then moved to the Crystal U18 team on loan in the same year.

He returned to Fulham the following year before joining the Crystal Palace U21 side.

From 2014 to 2016 Tieku played for various lower division clubs in England before signing up with Eastern Suburbs in New Zealand.

He moved to Hamilton Wanderers in 2018.

Solomon Islanders Gagame Feni and Molis Junior Gagame will also boost the All in One Cakes and Restaurant, Design Marine Services and HyperChem Pharmacy sponsored Blues.

Lautoka won the Pacific Community Cup back to back in 2018 and 2019.

The Sugar City side is in a tough group with Labasa, Suva and New Zealand Fiji Football Incorporat­ed (NZFFI) All Stars.

Ironically Lautoka defeated NZFFI in the final in 2018 and then downed Labasa in the 2019 final.

Fiji Football Associatio­n chief executive officer Mohammed Yusuf said teams can register six guest players.

“But four can only be registered in the 18 member list for each game,” he said.

“No Internatio­nal Transfer Certificat­e (ITC) required since it is a social community tournament.”

The Pacific Community Cup will be played at Prince Charles Park from November 24-27.

Ticket prices are $7 for adults and $3 for children $1 per ticket will be contribute­d to the WOWS Kids fund as part of Fiji FA’s corporate and social responsibi­lity.
