PROJECT AND CAPACITY MANAGER, CONSERVATION PROGRAMME (SUVA, FIJI)
The Fiji Country Program Director is responsible for the overall CI Fiji program and project portfolios, provides strategic leadership and oversight on the implementation of the Fiji Country Program as part of the Pacific Islands Program (PIP) under the auspices of the Asia Pacific Field Division.
The position will provide strategic guidance and leadership for all program and project functions, including fundraising, conservation finance, policy, science and country program management and oversight. The position co-leads development of new strategic initiatives with emphasis on development of nature-based solutions for climate change will also ensure good relations with the Government of Fiji and that CI activities are in line with national goals, southern cross stars, and programs to ensure that CI works effectively with all implementation partners. The Country Director is accountable for the overall management and operations of the CI Fiji program and is the relationship manager for in country and external stakeholders.
The position is also responsible as fisheries/marine advisor and will support strategic development of Jurisdictional Approach (JA) initiatives for tuna fisheries in Fiji with particular focus on leading CI Fiji’s tuna fishery-related engagements with government and industry partners. The position will provide thought leadership in the design and implementation of JA for Fiji blue water management, represent CI as a key technical resource, build alliances, forge strategic partnerships with critical stakeholders for project success. The position is also responsible to design capacity and capability needs and advise on capacity building needs to ensure project success for marine/terrestrial interventions.
This position will report directly to the Senior Director, Pacific Regional Program (SD-PRP), and maintain a professional network with all relevant persons within the Asia Pacific Field Division and CI Arlington.
Manage the Fiji Program Cost Centre and report monthly to SD-PRP
Overall leadership and management responsibilities to all CI Fiji Terrestrial, Marine and Operational Programs Coordinate CI implementation activities in Fiji
Assist in the implementation of CI’s new approach through the formulation and implementation of new initiatives in Fiji
Maintain and build on the key leadership role and partnerships developed by CI
Assist the National Trust of Fiji with the continued development of its Natural Heritage Unit in particular with the development of the network of protected areas based on the Sovi Basin
Provides thought leadership around the design and implementation of Jurisdictional Approaches for Offshore and Coastal Fisheries in Fiji
At the minimum, a degree in environmental/conservation management or a related field, advanced degree preferred
At least 10 years’ experience at senior management level in the conservation/environment / natural resource (agriculture, fisheries, forestry, environment) management field
Ability to lead a multi-disciplined team, to interpret scientific/social data, and apply it to achieve national and institutional goals
A record of success in influencing and partnering with key stakeholders
Demonstrated experience and ability to work effectively with government, regional and international organizations, NGOs, universities and the local communities on environmental management and conservation issues; display strong leadership abilities and HR management
Proven experience and assessment of multi-stakeholder relationships and partnerships involved in natural resource conservation & management
High-level of oral and written communication, negotiation, partnership building, and liaison skills An understanding of technical/scientific language in English

Capacity Manager
Key Biodiversity Areas (KBAs) are sites of global importance to the planet’s overall health and the successful conserva on of biodiversity. The KBA partnership is an ambi ous program, of 13 global organiza ons (including BirdLife), with a mission to prevent the rapid loss of biodiversity regionally by suppor ng na onally led efforts on the iden fica on of these unique and diverse places. BirdLife has funding to improve site-based conserva on and quality of informa on required for the jus fica on of Tigger Species in Vanuatu and Fiji. As part of this funding, our objec ve is to build the capacity of local and indigenous communi es, grassroot organiza ons, local rangers, and other na onal stakeholders in both countries.
The post will work within this scope and provide project management leadership and capacity building, in collabora on with the BLI and its local partners. The posi on is to be based at the BirdLife Pacific Secretariat Office in Suva, Fiji.

Primary Responsibili es
To build the capacity of the BirdLife Pacific staff and partnership in the Cook Islands, Fiji, French Polynesia, New Caledonia, and Palau. This role will also be responsible for managing BirdLife Interna onal’s work on Key Biodiversity Areas (KBA) in Fiji and Vanuatu, working closely with local and indigenous communi es as well as key na onal and regional stakeholders in each country.
Key Requirements
Extensive experience in capacity building and training in developing countries and grassroots organiza ons.
Extensive experience in large scale project management, team leadership and team management.
Demonstrate excellent understanding of conserva on, development, social and poli cal issues in the Pacific region and in small island environments.
Ability to work in a dynamic and fast environment and engage with various stakeholders including government officials, interna onal non-for-profits and local communi es.
Employment Terms
The post is offered ini ally as a 12-month contract, commencing February 15th. Subject to funding, the posi on could be extended and developed further in scope.
