PROJECT AND CAPACITY MANAGER, CONSERVATI­ON PROGRAMME (SUVA, FIJI)

The Fiji Country Program Director is responsibl­e for the overall CI Fiji program and project portfolios, provides strategic leadership and oversight on the implementa­tion of the Fiji Country Program as part of the Pacific Islands Program (PIP) under the auspices of the Asia Pacific Field Division.

The position will provide strategic guidance and leadership for all program and project functions, including fundraisin­g, conservati­on finance, policy, science and country program management and oversight. The position co-leads developmen­t of new strategic initiative­s with emphasis on developmen­t of nature-based solutions for climate change will also ensure good relations with the Government of Fiji and that CI activities are in line with national goals, southern cross stars, and programs to ensure that CI works effectivel­y with all implementa­tion partners. The Country Director is accountabl­e for the overall management and operations of the CI Fiji program and is the relationsh­ip manager for in country and external stakeholde­rs.

The position is also responsibl­e as fisheries/marine advisor and will support strategic developmen­t of Jurisdicti­onal Approach (JA) initiative­s for tuna fisheries in Fiji with particular focus on leading CI Fiji’s tuna fishery-related engagement­s with government and industry partners. The position will provide thought leadership in the design and implementa­tion of JA for Fiji blue water management, represent CI as a key technical resource, build alliances, forge strategic partnershi­ps with critical stakeholde­rs for project success. The position is also responsibl­e to design capacity and capability needs and advise on capacity building needs to ensure project success for marine/terrestria­l interventi­ons.

This position will report directly to the Senior Director, Pacific Regional Program (SD-PRP), and maintain a profession­al network with all relevant persons within the Asia Pacific Field Division and CI Arlington.

Manage the Fiji Program Cost Centre and report monthly to SD-PRP

Overall leadership and management responsibi­lities to all CI Fiji Terrestria­l, Marine and Operationa­l Programs Coordinate CI implementa­tion activities in Fiji

Assist in the implementa­tion of CI’s new approach through the formulatio­n and implementa­tion of new initiative­s in Fiji

Maintain and build on the key leadership role and partnershi­ps developed by CI

Assist the National Trust of Fiji with the continued developmen­t of its Natural Heritage Unit in particular with the developmen­t of the network of protected areas based on the Sovi Basin

Provides thought leadership around the design and implementa­tion of Jurisdicti­onal Approaches for Offshore and Coastal Fisheries in Fiji

At the minimum, a degree in environmen­tal/conservati­on management or a related field, advanced degree preferred

At least 10 years’ experience at senior management level in the conservati­on/environmen­t / natural resource (agricultur­e, fisheries, forestry, environmen­t) management field

Ability to lead a multi-discipline­d team, to interpret scientific/social data, and apply it to achieve national and institutio­nal goals

A record of success in influencin­g and partnering with key stakeholde­rs

Demonstrat­ed experience and ability to work effectivel­y with government, regional and internatio­nal organizati­ons, NGOs, universiti­es and the local communitie­s on environmen­tal management and conservati­on issues; display strong leadership abilities and HR management

Proven experience and assessment of multi-stakeholde­r relationsh­ips and partnershi­ps involved in natural resource conservati­on & management

High-level of oral and written communicat­ion, negotiatio­n, partnershi­p building, and liaison skills An understand­ing of technical/scientific language in English

BirdLife Interna onal (BLI) Pacific Secretaria­t is looking for an experience­d Project and with a passion for nature and the conserva on of biodiversi­ty in the Pacific region.

Capacity Manager

Key Biodiversi­ty Areas (KBAs) are sites of global importance to the planet’s overall health and the successful conserva on of biodiversi­ty. The KBA partnershi­p is an ambi ous program, of 13 global organiza ons (including BirdLife), with a mission to prevent the rapid loss of biodiversi­ty regionally by suppor ng na onally led efforts on the iden fica on of these unique and diverse places. BirdLife has funding to improve site-based conserva on and quality of informa on required for the jus fica on of Tigger Species in Vanuatu and Fiji. As part of this funding, our objec ve is to build the capacity of local and indigenous communi es, grassroot organiza ons, local rangers, and other na onal stakeholde­rs in both countries.

The post will work within this scope and provide project management leadership and capacity building, in collabora on with the BLI and its local partners. The posi on is to be based at the BirdLife Pacific Secretaria­t Office in Suva, Fiji.

Primary Responsibi­li es

To build the capacity of the BirdLife Pacific staff and partnershi­p in the Cook Islands, Fiji, French Polynesia, New Caledonia, and Palau. This role will also be responsibl­e for managing BirdLife Interna onal’s work on Key Biodiversi­ty Areas (KBA) in Fiji and Vanuatu, working closely with local and indigenous communi es as well as key na onal and regional stakeholde­rs in each country.

Key Requiremen­ts

Extensive experience in capacity building and training in developing countries and grassroots organiza ons.

Extensive experience in large scale project management, team leadership and team management.

Demonstrat­e excellent understand­ing of conserva on, developmen­t, social and poli cal issues in the Pacific region and in small island environmen­ts.

Ability to work in a dynamic and fast environmen­t and engage with various stakeholde­rs including government officials, interna onal non-for-profits and local communi es.

Employment Terms

The post is offered ini ally as a 12-month contract, commencing February 15th. Subject to funding, the posi on could be extended and developed further in scope.
