A DREAM come true for some enthusiasts, Fiji finally has an outdoor go-karting facility. Go Karts Fiji officially opened its tracks to the public with a cocktail and ribbon-cutting ceremony at the tracks in Sawani, Nausori on Wednesday, December 21 this week.
Owners’ son-in-law and fatherin-law duo, Elvin Pillay and Kamal Singh birthed the idea at a family get-together; Mr Pillay’s passion for anything with an engine and Mr Singh’s desire for a new start after retirement blending to kick-off their business dream.
The investment to start the business came completely from the pocket with no loans or grants, and much of the work to put together the track, was done with the help of friends and family. In his opening speech, Mr Singh said, “money sitting somewhere is just sitting there, let us invest and make our money work for us”.
“We are the one and only in Fiji; proud to say that. And where we’ll fall next; god knows! We are always positive, we think positive, we do positive. And I think that mindset has brought us here,” Mr Singh added.
“Our main focus was not making money, I had good money sitting in the bank, I was enjoying my retirement life with my buddies and then I didn’t see them for almost two months because I was busy with this. But we just started and I already feel like it has added ten more years to my life, I’ll live ten more years now!”
Mr Pillay, the man behind the idea and an enthusiast himself, spoke of the need for young people in the Suva-Nausori corridor to have more options for recreational activities to draw them into hobbies outside of pubs and clubs.
“So as daddy said, this go-kart business is not totally about making money, it’s about giving back to the community.”
Speaking at the opening ceremony Mr Pillay’s brother Edwin Pillay said, “Many people have thought about doing something of this nature in Fiji but I think these two gentlemen are the first in a very long time to actually bring this thought and dream to life.”
Go Karts Fiji currently has ten full-sized go-karts, and has ordered children’s go-karts expected to arrive in a month. Compliant with international safety standards and eager to bring Fijians a new experience, the owners are proud to declare Go Karts Fiji open for business.
