Fiji to host World Hindi Conference
MORE than 1000 participants are expected to convene at the Denarau Island Convention Centre in Nadi, for the 12th World Hindi Conference (WHC) in February next year.
Indian High Commissioner to Fiji Palaniswamy Subramanyan Karthigeyan said this during the official launch of the WHC promotional video last week.
“The participants will include high level dignitaries, government officials, Hindi scholars, academicians, writers, poets, critics, publishers and other Hindi lovers from all over the world,” Mr Karthigeyan said.
“This conference is the biggest in the world and this is the first time it is happening in the Southern Hemisphere — having it hosted in Fiji is extra special because of the unique position that the language has here.
“We are so delighted to see that Hindi is one of the three languages recognised by the Constitution and there is also this unique history of the Hindi language in Fiji itself — it has developed against all odds and it has not just survived but it has thrived and is flourishing — it is something that we would also like to showcase to the rest of the world.”
Mr Karthigeyan said the promotional video was one of the
High Commission’s efforts to create awareness on the conference.
“We will also be holding roadshows across Fiji — Suva, Lautoka, Ba and Labasa — the video is very powerful for the youths of today so we want to reach out to them through social media.”
He said registration was open for those who were interested in being a part of the conference on — www.vishwahindisammelan. gov.in
“We look forward to the very enthusiastic and active participation of not just those of Fijians with Indian descent but our beloved Fijian brothers and sisters across Fiji and those from around the world,” he said
