‘The Prince of Fiji’ gears up
FIJI’S new boxing sensation, Nathan ‘The Prince of Fiji’ Singh is readying himself for a busy year in 2023.
Singh made the headlines after two consecutive wins in Australia against local boxers.
It is the first time in many years a Fijian boxer has won two consecutive fights abroad.
The 23-year-old said he had seven fights lined up for him next year and all fights would be abroad.
“Majority of the fights will be in Australia while I am planning for a few in Asia as well. It’s going to be a busy year, so I have started preparations already,” Singh said.
The younger brother of Sebastian Singh added his next fight could be for the Australian Featherweight title.
“My next fight is in Australia on February 28. The opponent is yet to be confirmed, but if things go well, I could be fighting for the Australian Featherweight title.”
He said fighting overseas had not been easy.
“My first of the two fights was against Robert Lale, who is half Maori and half Samoan. He has the heaviest punch from the boxers I have faced and he has durable skills.
“The second fight was against an Olympian, Luke Martin. He has more than 300 amateur fights under his belt. He had fought some world rated fighters, but I am glad I was able to beat him more convincingly.”
Singh stopped Lale in the first round and beat Martin on a unanimous points decision.
He added if things went well, he would face Luke Boyd in one of his fights next year.
“I have trained with him and I know I have the capabilities not only to beat him but to stop him.”
Singh now trains in Laucala Beach in Nasinu and has thanked the public for the support he has been receiving.
He also acknowledged the hard work put in by his coaches and management.
“I have a strong team behind me who are very supportive. Koda Nasser and Terry Dublin, who are the managers of Sonny Bill Williams, have been working with me.
“My coach is my dad Gyan Singh, while my brother Sebastian Singh has been taking care of the logistic side of things.”
He added he takes care of his nutritional needs and strength and conditioning by himself.
Singh made his professional debut in October 2019 and has fought seven professional bouts since.
Apart from a controversial loss to Ronald Naidu in 2021, he has won the other six bouts, four by knockout.
