Hope for tripartite talks
TRADE unionist Daniel Urai is looking forward to the return of the tripartite discussions between government, employers and their employees after years of failed negotiations between the three parties.
Welcoming the election of the new Government, Mr Urai said he hoped that discussions between the tripartite stakeholders were re-established.
“We look forward to the new Government organising the genuine meeting of the tripartite forum,” he said.
“The previous government had the tripartite forum meetings going but it was only under a pretext.
“At the end those who were made to represent government did not have the mandate to finally reach a conclusive decision with the Employers Federation and the trade unions.
“We are glad that the announcement has been made that they enact the tripartite meetings and will have a genuine tripartite forum.”
He said he hoped that the new Government would keep their promises to review the Labour Act.
“We look forward to the new Government at least keeping their promises that were made by the previous government which they actually signed in 2015 in Geneva where we will review the Labour Act.
“A lot of work has been going towards that but with the last government, they were not genuinely serious about resolving those issues and the review of the Labour Act.
“The employer’s federation and the trade unions put a lot of work into it and I hope that this Government will assist in enabling us to be able to review the laws and encourage greater participation in Government and of course keeping industrial peace moving forward.”
