POLICE in Suva are looking for a man who took $40 off a vendor at the municipal market after pretending to be a policeman. A police spokesman said yesterday the man apparently led the vendor to believe he was a policeman by showing the vendor a faked identity card. The spokesman said the vendor, Mele Vuakatagan­e, believing that he was a policeman asked him to change $40 in notes to silver, from other vendors at the market.

A TOTAL of $13,000 worth of repairs to the Nadi bus station are due to be completed by the end of this month. The repairs, which began a month ago, were ordered after a number of road surface failures since the station was built. Bitumen Roads Fiji Ltd has already finished about half the work of refilling and re-tar sealing. The council is to raise a $200,000 loan for its proposed

A FORMER secretary of the Fiji Soccer Referees Associatio­n, Saiyed Ahmed Hussain, is the new chairman appointed at the annual meeting. Hussain, who was defeated in the election for secretary, a post he held for several years, will be responsibl­e for the day-to-day running of the associatio­n. Suva coach and top referee John Lal was appointed lecturer for the associatio­n.

AID agencies in Germany and Holland had given “positive responses” to the University of the South Pacific’s search for new sources of assistance, the Vice-Chancellor, Dr James Maraj, said yesterday. He returned at the weekend from three weeks in Germany, Holland and Britain where he discussed aid and developmen­t matters. USP was continuing to look for additional sources and new channels of assistance, particular­ly to develop new institutes and projects the university planned, Dr Maraj said.

POLICE are continuing their hunt for the killer of a young Suva man whose naked body was found on a rubbish dump near Suva one month ago yesterday. More than 500 people throughout Fiji have been questioned by a team of 10 detectives probing the murder who have mounted one of the biggest manhunts in Fiji in recent years. The body of the 21-year-old, who is believed to be from Pender St, was found lying on a rubbish dump at Veisari on July 12.

A MAN, who admitted raping a 45-year-old widow in the heart of Suva on Thursday night, was gaoled for three months in Suva Court yesterday. The 23-year-old welder of Valenimanu­manu, Suva, pleaded guilty to the charge before Magistrate Kenneth Moore.

AUGUST 27

THE Governor-General, Ratu Sir George Cakobau, and the Prime Minister, Ratu Sir Kamisese Mara, will take part in a combined thanksgivi­ng service at the Anglican Holy Trinity Cathedral tomorrow. The service with the band of the Royal Fiji Military Forces and other groups and choirs in attendance, begins at 3pm, marking the end of the Bible Week conducted by the Bible Society in the South Pacific.

THE question of lowering the voting age from 21 was one that needed the minutest examinatio­n, the Attorney-General, Sir John Falvey, told the Alliance convention on Saturday.

He said the matter needed to be studied by a statistici­an or an actuary, while the Alliance had to consider whether it might damage itself by extending voting rights to younger people. The party was not denying the political aspiration­s of the young.

AUGUST 29

THE 1976 nationwide Road Safety Week campaign begins today. Throughout the week children in all schools will be made aware of road hazards. Education officers in the nine education districts will liaise with District Jaycee chapters, police officers and district administra­tors to educate as many children as possible. Several districts have their own programs.

AUGUST 30

IT was important for teachers to seek new ideas, said Nacanieli Rika, the divisional education officer, Northern. He was addressing about 20 head teachers from schools in the Labasa area at Labasa College about the duties of a head teacher. He told the teachers that the colonial approach to education should have ended in 1970 when Fiji became independen­t.
