Coral Coast 7s kick
Firefighters to play smart
HAPPY 2023! And what a slam dunk start to the year which will be about a dozen days old next week and we’ll be in for an exciting three days at the Coral Coast rugby sevens tournament.
Naming rights sponsor, McDonald’s needs a big cheer from rugby fans and participating teams as Big Mac and his team have once again thrown their support of this tournament.
This is the 11th edition of the tournament and the event has become an annual fixture in the local sevens calendar held rightfully in the ‘rugby town’ Sigatoka. The Coral Coast 7s kick starts the rugby season and is greatly expected to see our elite players benefit from this outing as the national side looks to return to Hamilton and Sydney for the first time since 2020.
The pool of talent on display in Sigatoka stretches across the breadth of the nation and overseas with some of the best players in the world and the tournament showcasing fastpaced and highly competitive action as teams vie for the winner’s titles in the youth, women and men’s divisions.
The Coral Coast 7s is a great opportunity to experience the vibrant culture of Fiji, as well as its scenic beaches and lush rainforest.
Tough competition for i-Wau
FIRE coach Akuila Nasi says his players will have to play smart during the McDonald’s Fiji’s Coral Coast Sevens next week at Lawaqa Park in Sigatoka.
The side in a tough pool with the USA Falcons, Army and SRS Nukuvura.
Nasi said they would not underestimate any team.
“Army is one tough team and we’ve played each other in the last Super 7s series in Sigatoka, so we know they will come out strong,” he said.
“We know it is going to be a good competition and we need to play smart if we want to make it to the quarter-final.”
He said preparation had been intense since players returned from the festive season.
“We have a new bunch of players who have replaced some of our experienced ones who have moved up through work commitment or others.
“It has always been grooming these young players not only to make a name for themselves but to provide for their families.
“We’ve been taking part in tournaments for the past years and the Coral Coast 7s in no exception as it provides the best competition for all the teams.
“As the days go by, we’re setting the bar for our players to keep improving on their individual skills.”
He said they hoped to improve on their standing in the Super 7s series.
