Anupam: Comedy doesn’t excite me anymore

-

VETERAN actor Anupam Kher, known for his iconic comedy roles in films like Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge, Khosla Ka Ghosla!, and ChaalBaaz, has been undergoing a transformation in his cinematic journey in recent years. While comedy has been his forte, Kher has shifted his focus to more serious and challenging roles, sparking curiosity about this transition.

In a candid conversation with Indian Express, Anupam Kher revealed his perspective on this shift, and said that he has enjoyed doing mindless comedies, and still loves them. As his mind keeps maturing, he also needs to keep challenging himself. He further added that he needed to feel excited. Now comedy doesn’t excite him much.

Reflecting on his earlier comedic performances, he admitted he wonders how he performed the roles in Haseena Maan Jaayegi and several others. He also said that doing comedy in films like Dil Hai Ki Maanta Nahi, is difficult especially when one is a trained actor. Anupam Kher, known for his deep understanding of acting methodologies like Stanislavsky and Brecht, emphasised the courage and talent required to excel in comedy as a trained actor.

However, Kher expressed his openness to returning to comedy if the right opportunity arises. He noted that his natural flair for comedy is much more than any other serious role and something very juicy has not come to him as yet. Anupam added that when something like that comes to him, he will be happy to take up the role.

In recent years, Anupam Kher has taken on politically charged roles in films such as The Accidental Prime Minister and The Kashmir Files. When asked about the intersection of politics and art, Kher emphasised that as an actor, he approaches each project without letting his personal politics influence his work.
