New regulation­s gazetted

NEW regulation­s have been gazetted to strengthen health and safety at work, with the Ministry of Employment, Productivi­ty and Industrial Relations now categorisi­ng 59 “high risk nature of business” and 61 “low risk nature of business” that have to adhere to new requiremen­t to have their workplaces safe and without risk to health.

The Health and Safety at Work (General Workplace Conditions) (Amendment) Regulation­s 2024 came into effect on May 9th.

“An employer whose workplace or nature of business that is listed as high risk must ensure that his or her workplace is made available for inspection and audit every year,” states the new regulation.

“An employer whose workplace or nature of business that is listed as low risk must ensure that his or her workplace is made available for inspection and audit every three years.

“On an inspection and audit, the chief Health and Safety Inspector may issue the employer with a certi - cate of compliance.

“The chief Health and Safety Inspector may cancel any certi cate of compliance issued to an employer for a low-risk business where the employer’s business is subsequent­ly found to be a high-risk business.

clude manufactur­ing companies where machines are involved, poultry farming, forestry and logging, shing, electricit­y production, service stations, constructi­on, transporta­tion sector that includes road, water and air.

Low risk businesses are agricultur­e, office works, wholesaler­s, textile and clothing, banking, motor vehicle dealers, real estate, law rms, restaurant­s, hotels and hospitals and nursing homes.
