FORMER national 7s selector and player Sailosi Naiteqe has strongly criticised the FIJI Water Flying Fijians’ Ɲtness and game plan after a disappointing 5-47 loss to the mighty All Blacks last Saturday.

Speaking to this newspaper from his home in Queensland, Australia, Naiteqe expressed deep concern over the team’s performance and preparation.

“I only watched the Ɲrst 15 minutes before I turned off my television screen. The team’s Ɲtness level really dropped from the World Cup last year.

“These players need to be monitored both on and off the Ɲeld,” Naiteqe said.

He highlighted signiƝcant declines in both physical and mental Ɲtness.

“Fitness has dropped physically and mentally. There’s a clear need for improved monitoring and support for these players.”

Naiteqe also stressed the importance of having a Fijian coach as part of the coaching staff.

“Overseas coaches can’t fully monitor these players on and off the Ɲeld, that is why we need a Fijian coach in the team.

“Even though these players have gone out to play professionals, they still need to be monitored,” he added.

The former selector further called on the coaching staff to reintegrate running rugby into their game plan.

“Fijians are renowned for their ƞair in running rugby, but we didn’t see any of that against the All Blacks.

“Our traditional strengths should be a central part of our game plan,” Naiteqe added.

THE Digicel Fiji Baby Bula Boys are on a mission to become the Ɲrst Fijian team to qualify for the FIFA U17 World Cup next year.

The team, coached by Sunil Kumar, is set to depart the country today and will play their Ɲrst match against the Cook Islands next Monday.

“Now it’s pressure time for the boys but we know they can handle that pressure, they have been having two sessions in a day.

“Team bonding is strong in camp, the boys have gelled in well,” Kumar said.

The 23 players travelling were challenged by Fiji Football president Rajesh Patel to deliver positive results, having been provided with everything needed during their preparation period.

“Try to be the Ɲrst Fiji team to qualify for the U17 FIFA World Cup, we have done everything for you, it’s on you to deliver the result.

“Dedicate yourselves and maintain that discipline and ƞy the Fiji ƞag high,” Patel reminded the team.

The team will be led by Nasinu FC midƝelder Maika Dau, with assistance from Tukai Ravonokula of Labasa and Veleni Rasorewa.

Dau expressed conƝdence in the team’s readiness and determination.

“We are determined to produce a good result, we have worked hard with our coach and we will deliver,” Dau said.

The squad has shown impressive commitment and resilience during their rigorous training schedule which included two daily sessions.

This preparation has built a strong foundation of teamwork and camaraderie, essential for their success on the international stage.

In addition to their training, the players have been focusing on mental preparation and strategy sessions, aiming to outplay their opponents not just physically but also tactically.

The coaching staff has emphasised the importance of maintaining discipline on and off the Ɲeld, ensuring that the players are wellrounded athletes.
