Chandra wins Fiji Golf Classic
BA lawyer and Fiji PGA president Vikrant Chandra took out the inaugural GM Motors-sponsored Fiji Golf Classic, which concluded on Sunday at the Denarau Golf course in Nadi.
Chandra shot two under-par 70 on day three to tally a total of 213 (67,76,70).
In a hotly contested professional’s category, tied in the second spot was the Fiji PGA Order of Merit leader Tomasi Tuivuna (70,73,74), with Roneel Prakash (69,73,75) as they scored a total of 217.
Australia-based Adish Kumar, with a score of 224 (72,70,82) won the amateur’s category after edging Aryan Sharma (66,74,84) in the play-off.
Kanchan Rup took out the ladies’ category with a gross total of 255 (81,86,88).
Chandra said it was a beautiful three days and he acknowledged his family for the support.
“It was a great success. This is Ɲrst time this event is happening and we had great sponsors backing up from last year,” he said.
“It is not easy to play and stay away from family for a long time and they have endured and likewise the golfers have endured here as well.”
He said the event was very competitive, going against top players such as Zoheer Ahmed, Tomasi Tuivuna,
Roneel Prakash and some dark horses such as Abid Hussein as well.
Kumar, who won the amateur’s category, said it felt amazing to come to Fiji and he had always enjoyed playing golf here.
“I would like to thank all the sponsors for bringing this event together and all my playing partners, we had fun.
“The course is amazing and congratulations to everyone who made the effort to come out here,” he said.
Rup acknowledged the sponsors and all her playing partners.
“Thank you everyone for making this happen as I really enjoyed it.”
Chandra received $3600 for winning the professional’s category.
