Safety and wellbeing
STREETLIGHTS are installed for the purpose of improving security and safety in the community. They provide clear visibility at night, making it easier for road users to see the road and prevent accidents and crimes.
Streetlights also contribute to the aesthetic value of a place. Overall, streetlights play a crucial role in enhancing security, preventing accidents, and creating a safer environment for the community.
However, if they are not properly and regularly maintained and serviced, then the whole purpose of having them in the Ɲrst place is defeated. Also, it is important that we keep identifying and installing the lights in other places where you think our people’s lives may be at risk and their safety is being compromised.
Take for instance the Nadi Back Rd which has already claimed many lives mostly through accidents there happening at night.
Moreover, before we had streetlights on both ends of the Nadi Bridge but they are not there now. Then let’s look at Andrews/
Nawaka Rd junction which is too dark at night because there are no streetlights.
You also need to look at existing streetlights on the stretch of Queens Rd from Northern Press Rd to Palas at Nakavu in Nadi, which I believe, are useless because most of the lights either are too dim or they are hidden behind tree branches which seemingly are not trimmed in a long while.
There are other places where overgrown trees are causing a hindrance to the lights. Sad to see that authorities concerned are not bothered to check and act accordingly. They have the resources but I think we have the wrong people on the job. Please do not let our safety and wellbeing compromised due to your negligence.
