This Season’s Take on Drawing
Simultanément au Salon du dessin au Palais Brongniart, qui montre des dessins classiques et modernes, et quelques semaines avant l’exposition des dix lauréats du prix Guerlain, à l’occasion de son 10e anniversaire, au Centre Pompidou (à partir du 20 juin), Drawing Now ouvre ses portes au Carreau du Temple pour sa onzième édition (23 - 26 mars 2017). Notre sélection d’artistes, parmi les « focus » présentés par les galeries participantes, constitue ce dossier. Plutôt que de chercher un fil, nous avons choisi parmi des styles et des générations variés. Cette année, l’équipe de Drawing Now a préparé l’ouverture d’un nouveau lieu, dirigé par Christine Phal qui préside aussi le salon. On connaissait le Drawing Center à New York, le Drawing Room à Londres, le Drawing Hub à Berlin, mais il n’y avait pas encore de lieu consacré au dessin contemporain à Paris. Dans de plus modestes proportions, le Drawing Lab a ouvert en février, dans un hôtel de la rue de Richelieu. Il offre à des artistes la possibilité d’expérimenter le dessin sous toutes ses formes. L’exposition inaugurale, dont le commissariat est assuré par Gaël Charbau, montre une installation de l’artiste japonais Keita Mori, dont on avait vu le travail au prix Révélations Emerige en 2014. Composée avec du fil à coudre déployé sur les murs et dans l’espace, cette nouvelle oeuvre est une architecture imaginaire à travers laquelle l’artiste s’interroge sur les migrations dans le monde contemporain. Concurrently with the Salon du Dessin at the Palais Brongniart, featuring modern and classical drawing, and a few weeks before the exhibition of the artists shortlisted for the tenth Prix Guerlain at the Pompidou Center (starting June 20), the eleventh edition of Drawing Now is opening at the Carreau du Temple (March 23–26, 2017). We have made a selection from among the “focus” shows presented by the participating galleries. Rather than try to choose artists with some generational or stylistic link, we have put the emphasis on diversity. This year, the team at Drawing Now is also preparing to open a new venue, which will be run by Christine Phal, who also presides over the fair. New York has its Drawing Center, London its Drawing Room, and Berlin its Drawing Hub, but Paris has lacked a space dedicated to contemporary drawing. No more. If smaller than its foreign counterparts, the Drawing Lab, which opens this spring, is located in the basement of a building on Rue de Richelieu. Its role is to give artists a place where they can experiment with drawing in all its forms. The opening show, curated by Gaël Charbau, will feature an installation by Japanese artist Keita Mori, whose work was seen here at the Prix Révélations Emerige show in 2014. Made using sewing thread deployed over the walls and in space, this new installation is an imaginary architecture in which he interrogates the theme of migration in the contemporary world.
