China: New Exhibition Models?
Art and the art system have been codified for a long time in the West. In China these reference systems are only now being constructed little by little after the political and social upheavals of the twentieth century. All sorts of initiatives are shaping up in this regard. Many are simply hollow shells, but others help us rethink our own relationship to art and conceive new ways of exhibiting. Take the K11 Art Foundation. This art center was opened in Shanghai in 2011 in a shopping mall and concentrates on partnerships with the West, as exemplified by its current group show of contemporary Chinese artists,
being put on (through 2015) by the Palais de Tokyo in Paris.
